Introduction
The public imagery released by the U.S. Department of Defense’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) is designed to demonstrate an important point: footage can remain visually striking while still having an ordinary explanation. One of the most useful aspects of AARO’s public imagery collection is that it includes cases that have already been investigated to a high level of confidence.
Several published examples have been assessed as balloons. Rather than relying on appearance alone, investigators compare multiple features, including:
- the object’s shape across multiple frames;
- movement relative to local wind;
- apparent speed;
- persistence over time;

Birds provide another recurring example. At long range, especially through infrared or electro-optical military sensors, birds can appear as unusually bright or dark targets. These examples illustrate a broader investigative principle: analysts do not ask whether an object looks unusual in a single frame. They ask whether its complete behaviour remains unusual after accounting for optics, sensor performance and environmental conditions.
What unresolved footage really means
The presence of unresolved clips on AARO’s website is sometimes misunderstood as evidence for alien spacecraft. The office presents them much more cautiously.
One published Europe 2022 infrared video remains unresolved because investigators could not determine whether the observed heat signature represented:
- a physical object;
- reflected thermal energy;
- an environmental temperature difference; or
- a sensor display or processing effect.
The key point is not that the object displayed impossible performance. Instead, the available information was insufficient to determine what produced the image. Why sensor context changes the story
Military UAP footage often comes from sophisticated sensors, but sophisticated does not mean infallible.
Infrared systems, targeting pods and long-range electro-optical cameras compress three-dimensional scenes into two-dimensional images. Without accompanying information such as:

- aircraft motion;

- tracking mode;

The lesson is that a short clip rarely contains enough information to reconstruct the true motion of an object.
What the wider dataset shows
The public imagery page represents only a tiny fraction of AARO’s overall casework, but it reflects broader reporting trends.
