The Saturn persona
Sun Ra, born Herman Poole Blount, gradually reinvented himself as a cosmic figure who declared that he had come from Saturn on a mission connected with music, peace and human transformation. The alien identity worked because it transformed social exclusion into a source of imaginative power. Was Sun Ra’s Saturn story literal?
