Introduction

Pilots are often treated as especially credible witnesses to unusual objects in the sky, and for good reason. Professional aviators spend thousands of hours observing aircraft, weather and airspace, and they are trained to notice hazards quickly. That experience can make a pilot’s report more valuable than a casual observation. However, aviation expertise does not eliminate the limits of human perception. NASA’s 2023 review of unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP) stressed that witness testimony—no matter how experienced the observer—cannot substitute for calibrated sensor data, multiple independent observations and reliable measurements of distance, speed and position. What aviation experience can add

Professional pilots possess genuine observational advantages that can improve the quality of a report.

Compared with most members of the public, pilots routinely recognise common aircraft types, navigation lights, weather conditions and expected flight behaviour. They are trained to monitor changing conditions while maintaining situational awareness and to report unusual events accurately through established aviation procedures. Many also understand how atmospheric conditions, altitude and aircraft performance affect what can be seen from the cockpit.

These skills can make a pilot’s testimony more detailed and internally consistent. Reports may include headings, approximate altitudes, weather conditions, duration, cockpit instrument readings and radio communications that are absent from ordinary eyewitness accounts.

Recognising this value, NASA’s independent UAP study recommended making better use of the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), the confidential reporting programme already used by professional aviation personnel. The goal is not to treat pilot reports as proof, but to collect higher-quality observations in a systematic way that can later be compared with radar, weather and other datasets. Why distance and speed estimates can fail

Even highly trained observers face fundamental limits when viewing distant objects in the sky.

Unlike objects on the ground, airborne objects often lack reliable visual references. Without knowing an object’s true distance, the brain cannot accurately judge its size or speed. A small nearby object may appear similar to a large distant one, and apparent rapid motion can result from changes in viewing angle rather than extraordinary acceleration.

Several factors contribute to these errors:

  • Lack of depth cues. Clear skies provide few reference points for estimating range.
  • Relative motion. An aircraft moving at high speed can make stationary or slow-moving objects appear to race across the sky through parallax effects.
  • Changing viewing geometry. Two aircraft travelling on different headings can produce surprising apparent manoeuvres even when both are flying normally.
  • Night observations. Darkness removes horizon references and makes isolated lights particularly difficult to interpret.

These are well-established features of human perception rather than signs of poor training. Aviation safety research has documented numerous visual and spatial illusions that can affect pilots despite extensive experience. Cockpit conditions can create unusual impressions

The cockpit itself presents observational challenges that differ from standing on the ground.

Pilots divide their attention among flying the aircraft, communicating with air traffic control, monitoring instruments and scanning for hazards. Sightings are often brief and occur while the aircraft is moving rapidly.

Viewing through multiple canopy or windscreen layers can also introduce reflections or optical effects. Bright sunlight, haze, cloud layers and temperature differences in the atmosphere may alter the apparent appearance of distant objects. At high altitude, unusual lighting conditions can make ordinary objects appear unfamiliar.

Military aircraft add further complexity because observations may involve infrared targeting systems, night-vision equipment or compressed video feeds rather than direct visual observation. NASA’s review notes that sensor artefacts, video compression and incomplete metadata can create misleading impressions if recordings are analysed without understanding how the equipment works. One example discussed in the report involved imagery later assessed as a conventional aircraft whose unusual appearance resulted from imaging artefacts. Why trained observers still need corroboration

Experience improves observation, but it does not overcome every source of uncertainty.

A pilot can accurately report seeing an object behaving in a way that appears unusual while still being unable to determine what the object actually was. The difference between describing an observation and identifying its cause is central to scientific investigation.

For that reason, investigators seek independent forms of confirmation, including:

  • Radar tracks from multiple systems.
  • Electro-optical or infrared recordings with complete metadata.
  • Air traffic control records.
  • Weather observations.
  • Satellite information.
  • Independent witnesses viewing the same event from different locations.

These additional data help resolve questions that eyesight alone cannot answer, such as the object’s actual distance, altitude, velocity and flight path. NASA’s UAP study repeatedly identifies the absence of calibrated, multi-source data as one of the biggest obstacles to resolving unusual sightings. Why this matters for celebrity and military testimony

Public attention often increases when the witness is a famous pilot, military aviator or astronaut. Their professional background understandably lends credibility to the claim that they observed something genuinely unusual.

However, credibility and identification are separate issues. A highly reliable witness may truthfully report an event that remains unexplained because essential measurements are missing. Likewise, an honest observation can later receive an ordinary explanation once additional radar records, atmospheric data or sensor analysis become available.

This approach reflects the standard promoted in NASA’s review and echoed across modern aviation safety practice: evaluate the witness seriously, preserve the evidence carefully, and allow the combination of independent data—not reputation alone—to determine what happened.
