A UFO report often begins with a genuine mystery rather than a dramatic claim. Someone sees an unfamiliar light, object, or movement and cannot immediately explain it. That uncertainty is real, but it is only the starting point of an investigation. This distinction is particularly important when celebrity sightings attract public attention. A famous witness can bring widespread attention to an event, but the process of identifying what was seen remains the same. Investigators ask what information can be verified, what independent evidence exists, and whether familiar explanations fit the observations better than extraordinary ones.
Why observers can be mistaken
Human perception is remarkably capable, but it is not designed to estimate the distance, size, or speed of unfamiliar objects in an otherwise featureless sky. At night, especially, there are few visual reference points. A bright planet near the horizon can appear to move as clouds pass behind it, while distant aircraft lights can seem stationary before suddenly changing direction as the aircraft turns.
Several factors commonly contribute to honest misidentifications:
- Limited visual cues. Without landmarks, the brain struggles to judge altitude, distance, and scale.
- Atmospheric effects. Haze, temperature layers, clouds, and humidity can distort brightness, colour, and apparent motion.
- Unexpected objects. Satellites, weather balloons, drones, rocket launches, and military exercises are unfamiliar to many observers.
- Brief observations. Many reports involve only a few seconds of viewing, leaving important details uncertain.
- Memory reconstruction. People naturally remember unusual events as coherent stories, but recollections may change as they are discussed or revisited over time.
None of these factors imply dishonesty. They simply reflect how human perception works under uncertain conditions.
Evidence checks that solve cases
Professional investigators generally work by eliminating ordinary possibilities before considering more unusual ones. A report often changes from “unidentified” to “identified” because new evidence becomes available after the event.
Flight paths and aircraft records
One of the first checks is whether aircraft were operating nearby. Civil aviation transponder data, military flight schedules where available, and airport activity can explain lights that appeared unusual because of viewing angle or atmospheric conditions.
A distant aircraft flying directly towards an observer may appear almost motionless for several minutes before seeming to accelerate sideways when it changes course. Bright landing lights can also create the illusion of a hovering object.
Weather and atmospheric conditions
Meteorological records frequently resolve reports involving glowing lights or unusual motion. Investigators examine cloud cover, wind direction, temperature inversions, humidity, and visibility.
Temperature inversions can bend light in unexpected ways, while ice crystals and thin cloud layers can create halos, reflections, or bright pillars that appear unfamiliar to observers.
Astronomical explanations
Bright planets such as Venus and Jupiter have long generated UFO reports because they can remain visible for extended periods and appear exceptionally bright near the horizon. Atmospheric turbulence may make them seem to shimmer, pulse, or change colour.
Meteor showers, fireballs, satellite flares, and more recently satellite constellations can also surprise observers unfamiliar with these phenomena. Sensor analysis
Modern investigations increasingly compare eyewitness reports with instrument data rather than relying on testimony alone.
Radar returns may prove to be weather effects, birds, or electronic interference. Infrared cameras can produce misleading impressions when viewed without context because heat signatures behave differently from ordinary photographs. Camera autofocus, image stabilisation, digital zoom, and lens reflections can also exaggerate apparent movement.

How an investigation changes a case
The process is usually cumulative rather than dramatic.
A typical investigation might proceed as follows:
- A witness reports an unusual object.
- Investigators establish the exact location, direction, and time.
- Flight databases, weather observations, satellite positions, and astronomical charts are compared with the report.
- Photographs or videos are examined for optical effects or camera limitations.
- Independent witnesses are interviewed separately to compare accounts.
- If one explanation consistently matches all available evidence, the report is reclassified from unidentified to identified.
Importantly, the original witness may have described exactly what they experienced. What changes is not necessarily the observation itself, but the amount of information available to explain it.
Historical examples of ordinary explanations
Large collections of UFO reports illustrate this pattern. During the United States Air Force’s Project Blue Book, investigators examined more than 12,000 reports. Most were eventually attributed to conventional aircraft, balloons, astronomical objects, weather phenomena, satellites, optical effects, or other ordinary causes, while a smaller number remained unresolved because available evidence was insufficient rather than because alien technology had been demonstrated. The categories repeatedly used to resolve reports included:
- Bright planets and stars viewed under unusual atmospheric conditions.
- Aircraft reflecting sunlight or displaying bright landing lights.
- Weather balloons and research balloons.

- Satellites.
- Birds, kites, fireworks, and searchlights.
- Radar artefacts and other sensor anomalies.
These recurring explanations show that many reports begin as genuine mysteries simply because observers lack the contextual information available during later investigation.
Why solving a case is not accusing a witness
One of the biggest misunderstandings in UFO discussions is the belief that identifying an ordinary explanation means calling the witness mistaken in a dismissive sense.
That is not how scientific investigation works.
Witnesses usually report exactly what they perceived. Investigators are answering a different question: what physical object or event most likely produced that perception?
An experienced pilot, police officer, or celebrity can still misidentify an unfamiliar object under unusual viewing conditions. Expertise reduces some errors but does not eliminate the limits of human perception, especially when observing unexpected events in darkness or poor visibility.
For this reason, investigators generally separate two ideas:
- Credibility of the witness, meaning whether the person appears sincere and accurately reports what they remember.
- Accuracy of the interpretation, meaning whether the witness’s explanation matches the available physical evidence.
A witness can be entirely credible while still being incorrect about what produced the sighting.
Why some cases remain unresolved
Not every investigation ends with a definite identification. Some reports remain officially unidentified because there is too little reliable information rather than because an extraordinary explanation has been established.
Missing photographs, uncertain timings, conflicting witness accounts, incomplete sensor data, or poor observational conditions may prevent investigators from reaching a confident conclusion.
